Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner has pledged £2,500 to the Staffordshire Retired Police Dog Fund

Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis has pledged £2,500 to the Staffordshire Retired Police Dog Fund.

Police dogs are an integral part of policing across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, providing an invaluable service to reduce crime and increase community safety.

Police dogs may retire at a young age due to illness or injury which may have been sustained as part of their duty. Police dogs retiring from service do not receive any financial support and adopters are often unable to source insurance for ongoing veterinary bills. The fund will aim to assist in the ongoing treatment with the hope of taking away any financial pressures.

Earlier this year Mr Ellis took part in the ice bucket challenge with half of all donations going to the Retired Police Dog Fund and the other half toward motor neurone disease.

Mr Ellis said: “Police dogs provide an invaluable service working alongside officers to ensure the public are kept safe.

“The Staffordshire retired police dog charity does such a great job in looking after these dogs after they retire and I wanted to give the dogs something back for their service.”

Hayley Birkin, Chairperson for the fund, said: “The Staffordshire Retired Police Dog Fund was established a year ago to raise funds and awareness of the retired Staffordshire police dogs and ensure the dogs enjoy a long and healthy retirement.

“This year we have raised £4,000 and assisted in the veterinary costs of retired dogs. The fund has received £2,500 from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner which will be used to offer assistance in the form of a pension to any retired Staffordshire police dog that joins our fund.”

Anyone interested in donating can email retiredstaffspolicedogs@gmail.com or visit www.staffsretiredpolicedogs.org.

Zain Shah handed a three-year Community Punishment Order for sexual assault

A man has been sentenced for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl he groomed over a two-month period.

Zain Shah (born 27/02/91) of Rothsay Road, Blackley pleaded guilty to sexual assault of a female under 13 at Manchester Crown Court.

Today, Tuesday 11th November 2014, Shah was handed a three-year Community Punishment Order requiring him to attend a sexual offending treatment programme, five years on the Sexual Offender register and was also issued with a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for three years, preventing him from contacting or attempting to contact any female under the age of 16 years.

The court heard how Shah befriended the young girl after meeting at Heaton Park in August 2013.

Shah knew she was just 12-years-old, but that did not stop him texting and ringing daily, telling her that he loved her and wanted to marry and have sex with her.

Several times they arranged to meet at a car park during the early stages of September and it was here where the abuse took place, with Shah kissing the victim and sexually assaulting her as she tried to push him away.

When the victim’s mother discovered what he had done, she immediately reported Shah to the police.

Detective Sergeant Alex Wild said: “This was a classic grooming case, with Shah using emotionally charged language to suggest to this young girl that they were in a real, normal and healthy relationship.

“Of course, that is absolutely absurd.

“The reality is a 23-year-old man manipulated a child in order to get what he wanted, even pretending to be an undercover police officer who had been shot in the line of duty in order to win her confidence and sympathy.

“We hope that this case demonstrates that we take these incidents very seriously indeed, regardless of ethnicity, of religion or any other factors.

“Abuse is abuse and I want to try an assure the public that we will punish those people who exploit young people and do our best to make sure they face justice for their crimes.”

– GMP is working hard alongside partner agencies to tackle grooming and sexual exploitation of children as part of the Greater Manchester plan, Project Phoenix. The ‘It’s Not Okay’ campaign works to educate young people and their carers on the warning signs of child sexual exploitation and how to get help. Cumbria Police warn public to be aware of Talk Talk fraudsters

Cumbria police are warning the public to be aware of bogus telephone calls from people claiming they are from Talk Talk, in order to gain access to computers.

Police have received a complaint from a member of the public, from the Carlisle area, who received a telephone call from people claiming to be from Talk Talk. They were advised during the call that there was a virus on their personal computer and were then talked through how to allow the caller to have remote access to the computer. They were then asked for their bank details in order to receive a rebate.

In scams such as these sometimes money is asked for, but not always. Either way, once people have access to your computer they can find passwords and bank details.

Community Safety Officer for north Cumbria Claire Stevens, said:

“I would urge people across Cumbria to be wary of this type of call. These people can be very convincing, particularly to those who may not know a lot about computers.

“I would like to take this opportunity to remind people that they should be cautious of anyone who makes contact with them – whether it is in relation to computers, financial accounts, charities, or offers to buy/sell. Don’t allow anyone you don’t trust access to your personal information or your computer.

“My advice is to shut down, hang up, or close the door, to anyone you do not know. It isn’t rude – it is a sensible way to keep safe.

“Anyone with any concerns should contact Cumbria Police, Trading Standards, or Action Fraud, as appropriate. If you are unsure who to contact call Cumbria Police on 101 and we can give you advice.”

Two men associated with a Lambeth gang have been jailed for a total of 18 years for firearms offences.

Shaquille McNamee, 20 (25.3.94) of Corry Drive, Brixton, and Trey Foster, 20, (21.10.94) of Church Green, Myatts Field South SW9, each received nine years’ imprisonment.

They were jailed on Monday, 10 November at Inner London Crown after being found guilty on Friday, 11 July. Both men were convicted of one count of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and one count of possession of a prohibited weapon, namely an unloaded self-loading pistol. Foster had previously pleaded guilty to possession of a lock knife.

Their conviction follows a proactive operation by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service’s Trident Gang Crime Command.

On Wednesday, 10 July 2013 at 11:00hrs unarmed Trident plain clothes officers were conducting an operation in the area of the Somerleyton Estate in Brixton.

The Trident officers noticed two men acting suspiciously in Loughborough Park. When they approached them to investigate further, the men split up.

As the officers approached Foster he pulled out a large lock knife from the waistband area of his clothing. He was tackled and detained, with one officer being injured in the process.

McNamee was also detained and a search of the area he was seen to leave revealed a plastic bag containing a firearm – a self-loading pistol that was wrapped in a cloth.

Upon sentencing McNamee and Foster, the judge commended the officer in the case and the investigation.

Detective Inspector Paul Dorey, Trident Gang Crime Command, said: “The arrest and conviction of McNamee and Foster demonstrates Trident’s continued commitment to target dangerous offenders concerned in gangs, firearm criminality and serious youth violence.

“This successful prosecution also highlights the dangers posed to unarmed police officers and their bravery in confronting armed criminals who pose a high risk to the local community.

“I hope that the sentence given to McNamee and Foster will send a clear message to those concerned in gang crime that Trident does everything in its power to protect local communities from their violence and bring them before the courts to receive justice.”

Dealers “too scared to deal” during Wolverhampton policing operation

“We were looking to score all day but were unable to do so as the dealers were too scared to deal due to the police activity.”

These are the words of a Whitmore-Reans drug user made during a month long policing operation aimed at tackling criminality in the Wolverhampton suburb.

Overheard by officers, the comments show how a determined and proactive approach by officers in the area saw them triumph over drug dealers and the associated crime they inflict on the community.

The operation was launched after residents − fed up with dealers and an influx of drug users discarding needles in public areas − asked the police to take action.

In a series of strike days, officers from the local neighbourhood policing team – supported by other Wolverhampton police teams as well as the dogs and traffic units – arrested 12 people, seized large quantities of Class A drugs, recovered hundreds of thousands of pounds in cash and took three vehicles suspected of transporting drugs off the roads.

Highlights include:

  • Officers stopped an Audi on Bridgnorth Road on 8 November at 1.20pm. A quantity of class A drugs were found in vehicle and the driver was arrested. Two addresses were subsequently searched and more than £150,000 in cash was found. The man, Nathan Campbell, aged 24, of Marsh Lane was charged with two counts of possession with intent to supply (cocaine and heroin), two counts of assaulting two officers during arrest, possession of a bladed article and acquiring criminal property. He appeared before Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court yesterday (10 November) where he was remanded into custody.
  • A 43-year-old man was stopped in an Astra on Chester Street at 10.30am on 29 October and three bags of Class A drugs were recovered from the car. The driver was arrested on suspicion of drug possession and was later released on police bail while inquiries continue.
  • On 23 October at 5.40pm a Volkswagen Golf was stopped in Clarendon Street for having no insurance. The car was seized and the driver was taken to a police station. Multiple wraps of crack-cocaine were then found in the police van and the 38-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs. He has since been released on police bail while inquiries continue.

Sergeant Kevin Whitehouse who led the police activity said: “We’re pleased the operation, which provided a raised level of policing within the community to make the area uncomfortable and unattractive for both drug users and dealers, was able to achieve its intended aim.

“However, we are not complacent and this operation forms part of our long-term plan to tackle drug-related criminality in the area. We will be carrying out further strike days and we are asking local landlords to support us by evicting those convicted.

“There is a strong, vibrant and diverse community in Whitmore-Reans who do not want drugs in their area and with their support, we work toward achieving this and make the community a safer and better place to live.”

If you suspect drug dealing in your area, you can call police in confidence on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
